The cat distribution system, explained
You didn't choose the cat. A cat appeared on your step, under your car or in your laundry, and that was that.
01What it is
The cat distribution system is an internet joke with a lot of evidence behind it. The idea is that nobody really gets a cat. A cat is assigned to you, by some central office nobody has seen, and it arrives when it decides to. A kitten in a drainpipe. A stray who starts sitting on your balcony every evening. A friend's cat who has a litter right when you said you weren't ready.
People post their stories under the name, and the stories have the same shape: they weren't looking, then they were chosen.
02Why it feels true
Cats are unusually good at choosing people. Plenty of research suggests cats respond best when they get to start the contact. A 2021 study found cats were friendlier with people who let the cat make the first move and kept their hands to themselves. So the person who ignores the cat at the party is often the one it ends up on. From the outside, that looks a lot like a system.
03If a cat picks you in real life
Before you name it, check that it isn't someone else's. A vet or shelter can scan for a microchip for free or close to it. Ask the neighbors, post in local groups and check lost pet listings. A cat that looks well fed and calm around people may have a home two doors down and a very full social calendar.
If it really is on its own, a vet visit comes first, then food, water and somewhere warm. Many shelters will help with neutering costs for strays, and some run programs where you can foster before you commit.
04The census version
Cat Census runs its own distribution system. You answer questions about yourself, a crowd of cats takes sides on every one and by the end of the first chapter one cat has followed you since question one. It's assigned by your answers, so it's yours whether you like it or not. You do get to name it.
